Nancy Barnett, PhD, MS
Dr. Barnett is a Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Social Science and the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies in the School of Public Health at Brown University. She conducted some of the earliest work using a wearable alcohol biosensor to collect objective data in alcohol
consumption events and published the first intervention trial to use continuous objective monitoring of alcohol use with an alcohol biosensor. Evolving from her familiarity with the SCRAM CAM bracelet and its data, she developed software that uses established criteria to detect alcohol consumption in the sensor data while also automating the complex functions and calculations needed for working with sensor data (Transdermal Alcohol Sensor Data Macro; https://sites.brown.edu/tasmac/. With colleagues she has conducted recent research with the Skyn, including developing a set of best practices, identifying characteristics of environmental alcohol (e.g., hand sanitizer) to ensure it is not misinterpreted as consumed alcohol, and revising the TASMAC to accommodate Skyn data.
